September 2019: Undergraduate summer assistant Madison Meades places 4th in poster competition.
Maddie assisted MSc candidate Laura Clark this past summer at our harvest peat site in Eastern Quebec. Maddie is an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) recipient and received training in science communication culminating in an abstract and poster presentation. Maddie joins a solid group of science communicators who have spent time in the AERlab.
May 2019: Prof. Strachan wins the 2019 Macdonald Campus Award for Teaching Excellence.
The award was handed out at the spring convocation. Ian is also a nominee for the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching which will be awarded at the fall convocation ceremonies.

Vidana Gamage, D.N., Biswas, A., and Strachan, I.B., 2018. Actively heated fiber optic technique to monitor three-dimensional wetting patterns under drip irrigation. Agricultural Water Management 210: 243-251
Vidana Gamage, D.N., Biswas, A., Strachan, I.B., and Adamchuk, V.I., 2018. Soil water measurement using actively heated fiber optics at field scale. Sensors 18(4) 1116 doi:10.3390/s18041116
Scott Macdonald completes his MSc thesis and lands a job.
Congratulations to Scott who completed his MSc thesis: "Interannual variability and spatial heterogeneity in net carbon exchange at a restored peatland in Alberta" Congratulations also to co-supervisor Dr. Maria Strack (U. Waterloo).
Scott won't waste any time pondering his future as he has accepted a position with ESRI as a science writer in their software division.
Welcome Vera!
Congratulations to new mom Kelly Nugent and welcome to our newest lab member. Vera has visited the lab a few times so that Kelly can work on her thesis manuscripts. Ian strongly encourages this - not to get Kelly finished - but so that he can play with the baby!

2017 NEWS: Kelly Nugent wins Best Student Paper at PERG2017
|
Kelly gave an oral presentation at the Peatland Ecology Research Group 2017 meeting in Quebec City that was judged as the best student presentation! Her talk was titled "Multi-year net ecosystem carbon balance at the restored Bois-des-Bel peatland" and presented some of the findings of her PhD research. This seems to be an annual occurrence as last year, Kelly won the outstanding student presentation award from the Canadian Society for Agricultural and Forest Meteorology (CSAFM) at the 3rd AMS Conference on Biogeosciences in Salt Lake City, UT for her paper "Evaluating the carbon sequestration function of a horticulture-extracted restored peatland"
Congratulations Kelly! |
