Dr. Ian B. Strachan, Ph.D.
After 20 years at McGill with the last 10 serving as Associate Dean (Graduate Education) for the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, I have moved to the Department of Geography and Planning at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
I began my academic journey at the University of Toronto where I studied Physical Geography. I traveled down the 401 to Kingston where I earned MSc and PhD (in 2000) degrees at Queen's University. I then went up the 416 to Ottawa, completing post-doctoral research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. My journey next took me east along the 417/A40 to McGill and now I am returning 'home'. As the late Neil Peart wrote: "The point of a journey is not to arrive" Academic CV |
Ph.D. Students
Miranda Hunter
Miranda is a doctoral candidate at U. Waterloo with Dr. Maria Strack and co-supervised by me. Miranda holds an NSERC CGSD award and is studying the hydrological controls on greenhouse gas production and emission in peatlands undergoing active harvesting.
James Zhao
James is co-supervised by Dr. Neal Scott. James is investigating the net carbon exchange during shoulder and winter seasons at a mesic tundra ecosystem in the Canadian high arctic near the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory.
Jean-Pierre Lebrun
J-P will begin his PhD program at Queen's in September 2024. Co-supervised with Dr. Maria Strack, J-P will be studying the emissions of CO2 and CH4 from a peatland harvested using the Acrotelm Harvesting Method.
M.Sc. Students
Sophie Burgess |
Sophie began her research in September 2021 on freshwater marsh carbon movement focusing on the below-ground components. Sophie is co-supervised at McGill with Dr. Cynthia Kallenbach in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences.
Steffy Velosa
Steffy began her research in September 2021 and is co-supervised with Dr. Nigel Roulet (Geography, McGill). Steffy is studying the role that field management plays in the release of greenhouse gases from drained peat fields and peat stockpiles.
Leah Brown
Leah began her MSc program at Queen's Geography in September 2022. In collaboration with Dr. Pelster at AAFC, Leah is studying the emissions of N2O from agricultural fields associated with winter and spring conditions.
Prateeksha Vadali
Prateeksha joined our lab from the University of Alberta in September 2023 and is co-supervised by Dr. Maria Strack at U. Waterloo. Prateeksha is examining the changes in peatland hydrology resulting from the Acrotelm Harvesting Method.
Undergraduate Students - 2024
Amelie Delesalle
Amelie is conducting research towards an honours thesis in her final year. She is studying the GHG emissions from a 15-yr old restored peatland and is supported by a Queen's USSRF.
Katherine Bot
Kat is continuing her research in her final year towards an honours thesis. She is examining the ecosystem-scale (tower-flux) GHG exchanges resulting from the Acrotelm Harvesting Method and is supported by a Queen's USSRF.
Declan Roche
Declan is conducting research towards and honours thesis in his final year of studies. He is examining the plant-community GHG exchanges in post-harvest recovery from the Acrotelm Harvesting Method.
Charlie Bodger
Charlie has completed her second year of studies and will be assisting with our summer research supported by a Queen's USSRF.
Gavin Cordon
For his senior project, Gavin is developing a portable sensor for temperature, humidity and trace gas to be used in undergraduate course curriculum.
