Scott MacDonald
Scott arrived in Montreal from the Midwest U.S. in Fall 2015, and earned an MSc degree in the McGill Department of Geography. His research with the AERLab took place at the Seba Beach post-harvest restored peatland in central Alberta, and investigated how and why carbon flux varies at these ecosystems in two additional dimensions: interannual variability and fine-scale spatial heterogeneity. Scott analyzed carbon flux data from two eddy covariance towers located at the peatland site over multiple growing seasons. In addition, he measured local hydrology at the site to examine moisture controls on carbon flux.
Scott graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Missouri in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography. He worked as an undergraduate research fellow at SUNY-Buffalo in Summer 2014, studying impacts of industrial land use on surface water-groundwater flux. Scott is a lifelong musician and a recovering student journalist who previously worked as managing editor of the University of Missouri student newspaper, The Maneater. While in Montreal, he learned to appreciate Habs hockey and became a regular at the Tim Hortons on rue Sherbrooke.
Awards:
National Science Foundation (U.S.) Research Experience for Undergraduates, University at Buffalo, State University of New York, 2014.
Thesis:
Scott MacDonald 2017 “Interannual variability and spatial heterogeneity in net carbon exchange at a restored peatland in Alberta” 102 pp.
