Kelly Nugent
Education: M.Sc. Renewable Resources, McGill (2014); B.Sc. Environmental Science (Honours), Concordia University (2010)
Kelly has submitted her doctoral degree investigating the net effect of restoration of post-extracted peatlands on their greenhouse gas (GHG) function. Successful ecosystem restoration would re-establish the biological feedbacks which would allow reinstatement of the GHG exchange drivers found in natural peatlands. We would expect then a return to ‘normal’- a net carbon dioxide sink and smaller methane source. However the application of a best practices restoration method, as defined for biodiversity, may result in a delay in ‘success’ over decades due to large methane gas release from created pools and remnant ditches. Kelly is focussing on the influence of biogeochemistry and plant-soil interactions on carbon dioxide and methane gas exchange at a restored site compared to an unrestored site and a natural peatland, in eastern Quebec.
